The very first Mother’s Day took place in 1905 when Philadelphians Anna Jarvis and John Wannamaker established the day in honor of Jarvis’ late mother. After successful celebrations in Philly and NYC over the next fews years, Mother’s Day became a U.S. holiday in 1910.
Jarvis later came to regret how commercial the holiday has become, but the damage was done. We’ve been celebrating Mother’s Day ever since.
