In the last fiscal year, the $2-per-pack tax made $58.8 million for the School District of Philadelphia.
The California councilman who led the movement says Philadelphia’s mayor should compromise to make the tax happen — but not too much.
“The point,” said one tax expert, “is that Rep. Marino is mixing oranges with horse apples.”
He said in an 2007 CNBC interview that he’s in favor of the measure — but he’d push for a reduction first.
