After 10 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, Donte Rollins of North Philadelphia will be home for Christmas. Rollins was released Wednesday after spending a decade behind bars for attempted murder and related charges stemming from the shooting of a six-year old boy in Strawberry Mansion. Three men were convicted based on witness testimony, but evidence found by his new defense team from the Pennsylvania Innocence Project helped grant Rollins a new trial. The DA agreed to a new trial back in April, but Common Pleas Court Judge Rayford Means, who had initially sentenced Rollins, waited until November to deny that appeal. The Superior Court reversed that decision on Tuesday and rebuked Means for delaying his ruling, before the DA's office opted to drop all charges. Rollins called the 10 years "pure hell" before telling reporters, "I didn't lose my mind, but I damn near lost it."
Doc’s Union Pub, the Pennsport bar with connections to the leadership of powerful electricians union IBEW Local 98, has been sold. The new owners of the building at at Second and Mifflin are business partners Bill McKeever and Anthony Giordano, who are overseeing a super-quick renovation that will transform the space into a completely new restaurant called Mifflin Tavern — potentially open by New Year’s Day. You've read about the building, of course. The spot was notorious both for serving underage drinkers — it was shut down briefly in 2013 because of too many violations — and for its connection to IBEW president (and ostensible namesake) John “Johnny Doc” Dougherty. Over the summer, when the FBI raided Dougherty’s home and union headquarters, they also paid a visit to this bar. Here's what you need to know about the new gastropub that's replacing it.
It won't be long before the POTUS and Veep are sent packing from Washington. While President Obama will be off planning his library and doing the things stately ex-Presidents do, Vice President Biden will reportedly be spending his time eating hoagies. According to Politico's Playbook, the buzz around Washington is that Biden will "set up shop at the University of Pennsylvania" after he leaves the White House. Biden, who still hasn't ruled out a potential run for POTUS in 2020, will set up his staff at UPenn, something he had been apparently whispering in the ears of locals for the last six months. Who knows what else Uncle Joe has been whispering in people's ears. Pretty soon, we'll all have a chance to find out.
