WHAT ARE THE ODDS THAT PHILLY GETS A SECOND CASINO TODAY?
The Inquirer’s Harold Brubaker says we won’t have to wait long for the news: The outcome of the meeting was likely decided in advance. And after the decision, there’s a 30-day appeals process, which means neighborhood groups get to have their say. Where could a casino land, and what’s at stake? Billy Penn looks at the state of gambling in Philly and the region — and why one expert calls another gaming den a “train wreck.”
SAY HI TO SEPTA’S CRACK TEAM OF SOCIAL MEDIA DETECTIVES
Meet SEPTA’s CIA — they’re not a spy agency, they’re Customer Intelligence Analytics. You can find them on Twitter at @SEPTA_SOCIAL, and they’re watching everything. Billy Penn goes inside the crack unit, housed in Center City, which monitors and replies to complaints about late trains, high-fives users for great photos, and, police say, caught an off-duty transit cop with his pants down on the Broad Street Line.
THE PPA, WHICH IS ARRESTING UBER, ALSO KIND OF NEEDS IT
Richard Dickson, the Deputy Executive Director of the PPA, met with bloggers last week and had some startling things to say about the taxi industry in Philadelphia. The PPA, remember, has been fairly anti-UberX, calling police in “sting” operations and getting drivers’ cars impounded and issuing fines for what it’s calling unlicensed hacked cabs. But Dickson says the ride-sharing app is actually causing taxis to do things they’d been putting off for years — such as upgrading technology to allow credit card payments and integrating dispatch centers. Plan Philly‘s Jon Geeting has more.

AL DIA: POPE FRANCIS’ VISIT COULD MEAN THE WORLD TO PHILLY’S LATINOS
The Pope’s visit in 2015 will draw millions to Philadelphia, and will mean the world especially to the city’s Latino Catholic population, writes Al Dia’s Sabrina Vourvoulias. “Years ago, the parishioners of St. Thomas Aquinas and Annunciation churches petitioned and fought to have a shrine for Our Lady of Guadalupe installed in the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul. When it was finally installed, the congregations — a majority of them among the lowest-income Catholics in the entire Archdiocese — bought roses and rosaries to hand out to everyone in a consecration Mass that more-than-filled the cavernous Cathedral.”
