THE PA. CIGARETTE TAX INCREASES TODAY
The Pennsylvania cigarette tax is now $2.60 per pack (that’s on top of Philly’s $2 per-pack tax). The state tax goes up today as part of the new budget Gov. Tom Wolf let pass last month. In fact, this makes up 57 percent of the new tax package, which also includes digital downloads and lottery winnings. Pennsylvania’s is the 10th-highest cigarette tax in the nation, and this increase is expected to bring in more than $400 million in revenue.
FARE COLLECTION CHANGES START TODAY AT REGIONAL RAIL STATIONS
If you board a Regional Rail train at Temple, Jefferson, University City, 30th Street or Suburban stations, get ready for the ticketing changes that start today. You now have to show your ticket or pass before going to the platform for trains leaving between 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. SEPTA says the change is temporary and will make commutes more efficient during the rail car shortage.
SIDDIQ MOORE WANTS TO SAVE WEST PHILLY WITH WATER ICE
Half a block from the intersection where a Philadelphia police officer was shot execution-style through the window of his patrol car last year, Siddiq Moore is renovating an empty corner storefront. Moore took over a water ice cart during his sophomore year at Temple in the ’90s and turned his real-fruit recipes into a full-time gig that taught him the ins and outs of food service industry. Now he’s branching out — with new menu items and a new location on 60th Street. Moore wants to turn his water ice shop into a neighborhood anchor.

ED RENDELL: ‘I’M NOT ONE FOR NAME CALLING’
This calls for a fact check. Lots of speeches during the Democratic National Convention meant lots of opportunities to look into politicians’ claims. But one stood out the most. During an interview Wednesday with Politico, former Philadelphia mayor and Pa. governor Ed Rendell said he thinks Senate candidate Katie McGinty went too far when she called Republican opponent Pat Toomey an asshole. And then he said he’s “not one for name calling.” Pants. On. Fire.
