IS HUNTING PARK AS SAFE AS JIM KENNEY SAYS?
As he asked Philadelphia City Council to consider a $300 million investment in the city’s parks and recreation centers, Mayor Jim Kenney told a success story. During his budget address in council chambers last week, the first-year mayor said that when the city and the Fairmount Park Conservancy invested $5 million in Hunting Park, “crime went down 89 percent within a half mile radius of the park over the next three years.” That seemed like a huge drop in a high-crime area of the city, so we decided to check out the claim.
BOOMING FRANKFORD AVE. AND THE SOUL OF FISHTOWN
Welcome to Fishtown’s Frankford Avenue, where legacy Fishtown Jewelry is nestled beside a hip coffee shop, with construction — new structures and renovations — happening all around. There’s measurable foot traffic. Taxis fill the street on Fridays and Saturdays. Luxury cars speed down the road; a white stretch limo breezed by the jewelry store. Things are busier. But are they better? Our Anna Orso on a commercial stretch in transition.

INSIDE HALLOWEEN, PHILLY’S HIDDEN JEWELRY GEM
Normally our Secret Philly stories take you someplace inaccessible or unusual; Halloween isn’t that kind of secret. It’s a jewelry store, but it’s anything but ordinary. It’s one of those places for those that know; everyone else might not have the faintest clue of its existence, as no signage hangs on the Pine Street rowhouse where Henri David has long kept shop. But it’s worth stopping in.
RALLY: BELLA VISTA’S NEW COFFEEHOUSE & MEETING SPACE FOR RENT
Instead of building a coffee station inside their office, Meredith Waldman and Sun Park flipped the concept on its head and located their marketing firm inside a coffee shop — their coffee shop. Welcome to Rally, which opened Tuesday at Seventh and Bainbridge in Bella Vista. It’s both a neighborhood cafe and a creative agency; here’s what’s inside.
