JOHNNY DOC’S UNION DRONES: LIKE ‘ROGUE COWBOYS’ IN THE WILD WEST
Last month, union boss John Dougherty (aka “Johnny Doc”) scored Local 98 a fleet of surveillance drones. A YouTube video creepily soundtracked with “Somebody’s Watching Me,” announced plans to use the camera bots to root out unlicensed workers and other violations. Does that break the law? Commercial use requires a license, notes a registered drone photog, who says, “It’s like the Wild West out there and these are rogue cowboys.”
WHY KIDS AREN’T HEADING FOR PHILLY’S CATHOLIC COLLEGES
The Philadelphia area’s Catholic parishes and schools have felt the sting for years, with more than 50 of each closing or merging since the ’90s. The universities might be next. The trends afflicting grade schools and high schools could lead to an uncertain, foreboding future for Catholic higher ed if they don’t adapt.
A RARE CASE OF HARRISBURG TO THE RESCUE
The Philly Phlash hit the streets this week, marking the earliest start ever for the bright purple buses that run in a loop from Penn’s Landing to the Art Museum, and it’s all thanks to Harrisburg. No, really. The popular tourist shuttle was saved from shut-down by covering nearly three quarters of its operating budget with money from the state.
