INSTAGRAM OF THE DAY
Yesterday the Phillies took to Instagram and shared this throwback photo of Carli Lloyd, the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team star and World Cup winner.
PHILADELPHIA RACES TO GET MILLENNIALS INTO CITY JOBS
Philadelphia Managing Director Rich Negrin is looking at an interesting problem. In up to five years, some 36 percent of city employees will be eligible for retirement or at least a deferred retirement plan. So the city will have about 9,000 positions to fill — and in order to fill them, Negrin is looking to the city’s booming base of millennials. He tells Billy Penn his office established a Millennial Recruitment Advisory Board — here’s a few people who made the cut for that list, and why they’re trying to show that working for the city can be more than being a character on Parks and Recreation.
WILL THERE BE A POPE FENCE?
NBC10 turned heads late last week when it reported that officials were planning to cordon off some four miles of Center City via an 8-foot-tall fence during Pope Francis’ visit. And maybe you were getting ready to get fireworks when Mayor Nutter’s press secretary seemingly knocked that report down, via Newsworks, saying city officials had no plans for such a fence. Not so fast, said the U.S. Secret Service — it’s just too early to speculate. The Philly Declaration, meanwhile, reports that the Secret Service has definitely used this kind of fence in the past, especially during political conventions. Yeah, and we have one of those coming in 2016 — so we might get this sucker twice in as many years.

WATCH MAYOR NUTTER DROP THE MIC AT WELCOME AMERICA
You knew our mayor could rap, right? Mayor Michael Nutter, a former radio DJ, knows the Sugar Hill Gang’s classic ‘Rapper’s Delight’ backwards and forwards. He performed it when he was inaugurated, and on July 4, he closed out The Roots’ massive concert on the Parkway with it. You can watch video of the performance — and his epic mic drop at the end — right here. Bonus video: The Roots sampled the cheeseball Action News ‘Move Closer to Your World’ theme song and made it (temporarily) awesome; that video’s here.
PJ WHELIHAN’S AND THE SCIENCE OF BAR FOOD
ICYMI, yesterday we ran through some of the ways PJ Whelihan’s makes sure its bar eats are up to snuff. Did you know focus groups are involved? And that the chain’s semi-legendary Buffalo Bar Fries would have been gone forever if not for a sustained pitch via social media? Here’s how PJ’s makes sure your beer has the perfect companion.
