FATTAH NABS PHILADELPHIA DEMOCRATIC PARTY ENDORSEMENT
Chaka Fattah just got an Election Day boost. The indicted congressman, facing a primary fight in his quest for re-election in the second congressional district, on Friday won the endorsement of the city Democratic party. Will it be enough to fend off Rep. Dwight Evans, who has lots of cash on hand plus the blessings of Mayor Jim Kenney and Gov. Tom Wolf?
SOURCES: KENNEY TO TRY FOR A SODA TAX
It didn’t work when Nutter tried it in 2010 and 2011, but Philly Mag hears Mayor Jim Kenney is primed to propose a soda tax when he announces his first budget next week. Have its chances of passing changed? Well, some City Council members who opposed the tax (like, ahem, Councilman Kenney) are no longer there, and majority leader Bobby Henon is in favor. Plus Kenney just brought on NYC soda fighter Dr. Tom Farley as new Health Commissioner. However, the lobbyists, soda magnates and unions who opposed the bill last time are still around.
IS ‘BLACK LIVES MATTER’ DRAGGING ON PHILLY POLICE RECRUITMENT?
Has Black Lives Matter taken a toll on the Philadelphia Police Department? They’re running at an officer deficit, with approximately 200 more officers needed to plug the gap. Recently, they haven’t been able to recruit enough people — just 172 last year versus 357 in 2008. Why is it so hard to find new cops?
