PROTEST PHILLY: MAPPING THE MARCHES SINCE LAST WEEK
Since Alton Sterling was killed by police in Baton Rouge last week and video of his death reverberated across the country, Philadelphia has been protesting. Monday morning represented the sixth consecutive day of demonstrations against police brutality in Philadelphia. And though about a dozen people were arrested for blocking I-676 on Wednesday, the protests have been largely peaceful and other mass arrests haven’t been reported since then. Here’s a breakdown of the protests that have already taken place, the ones that are scheduled and a look at where demonstrators marched.
WHY FISHTOWN IS OVER ITS SIGNATURE DRINK, ARCTIC SPLASH ICED TEA
Arctic Splash has long captivated Fishtown, with the popularity particularly rising in the last 15 years, according to corner store owners. You could see the colorful cartons in people’s hands and in the gutters, where they seemed to litter the whole neighborhood. Arctic Splash appealed to newcomers and longtime residents. RANKING THE PHILLIES’ HOME RUN DERBY ENTRANTS
The Home Run Derby has long been one of the marquee events of Major League Baseball’s All-Star Week. Originally a contest between the American and National league in 1985, the derby has changed format almost as many times as the event has been held. Last year — following four seasons where captains were selected in an effort to get bigger-named players to take part — the Home Run Derby was turned into a head-to-head bracket-style format with an American League slugger paired against one from the National League. Again, for the seventh straight season, no member of the Phillies is in the Home Run Derby. But we used to be! So we ranked the ones who swung for Philly.
THE ULTIMATE FROZEN TREATS BRACKET WINNER IS…
We started with 32 options, but there can only be one winner. You voted, round by round, until there were two left: Gelato vs. water ice. Finalists Siddiq’s and Capogiro have a lot in common. Both gelato and water ice originated in Italy, and both of these Philadelphia producers use fresh fruit and eschew artificial flavors or colors. Here’s who took home our crown.
