It’s gonna be snowy for a while, though things might warm up a bit on Sunday — but at least Fairmount Park looks pretty. Photo via Instagram user @chuckseye.
PRESIDENT OBAMA: LET’S MAKE COMMUNITY COLLEGE FREE
Fighting the idea that he’s a lame duck, President Obama is floating the idea that community college should not cost anything — assuming students are willing to work. The president teased his upcoming announcement (experts think it’ll happen during the State of the Union) in a video posted to Facebook Thursday. The cost for the expected 9 million students who’d participate? A cool $70 billion — and there’s no word on whether community colleges could even handle that many new students. More to come.
MANSPREADING: THE TRANSIT VIRUS HITS SEPTA
SEPTA officials tell Billy Penn that over the last month customer service has fielded several complaints of “manspreading,” the practice of sitting on the subway and spreading your legs, thus, taking up at least two seats. The problem that started in New York City’s subway lines has made its way to Philly, probably via NJ transit. Be careful out there — you, too, could be a victim of the dreaded manspread.
HERE’S WHERE BIKE SHARE WILL (PROBABLY) BE
Philadelphia Bike Share is officially coming this spring — and now we know where the city is planning to put those stations. A new report outlines the results of their month-long survey seeking input on 100 potential bike share locations. The survey drew more than 10,000 comments from the public on the locations. At this point, they’ve split up the potential locations into three categories of when they’ll be installed: Phase 1 (spring 2015), Phase 2 (spring 2016) and (basically) “sometime after that.” We mapped these locations to help you find the ones closest to where you live, work or play.
