WHY HALAL CARTS ARE FLOODING CENTER CITY STREET CORNERS
While the hipster food truck trend seems like it might have peaked, the subcategory of halal carts shows no sign of letting up. If there’s an empty corner downtown these days, it’s likely that before too long, a halal vendor will show up there. So how did the city go from a handful of these carts to a Starbucks-level ubiquity in just a few years?
PETITION TO ‘SAVE THE WEISBROD & HESS BREWERY’
Martha Street in Kensington is getting hipper and hipper — viz popular new bar Martha, which sells a hoagie called “the Jawn.” Philadelphia Brewing Co. has rehabilitated part of the 19th century Weisbrod & Hess brewery to gorgeous effect, but the structures on the other side are now up for sale. A petition on Change.org asking city leaders to ensure its preservation has 624 signatures so far.
MORE SEPTA KEYS AVAILABLE STARTING MONDAY
If you weren’t in the first round of SEPTA Key “Early Adopters,” here’s your next chance to go electronic. Starting Monday, Aug. 1, Key Cards loaded with either weekly or monthly TransPasses will be available for sale at 15th Street Station and SEPTA HQ at 1234 Market St. Each Monday after that, an additional purchase location will be added, according to this schedule.

There's a potluck for the South Street mini station, a coordinated stoop-sit in Fishtown, and a picnic in Graduate Hospital. Gatherings across the city will help raise awareness about safety and crime prevention and strengthen police-community relations. Do a search to find what's going on in your neighborhood.

Rittenhouse Square is always hopping, Washington Square is a gorgeous national park and Franklin Square is full of family fun. But there's another square just waiting for its time in the sun, and this traveling pop-up is the best excuse to head to Pennsport and check it out.
