SEPTA PULLS 1/3 OF REGIONAL RAIL FLEET DUE TO ‘DEFECT’
On Saturday, SEPTA sidelined 120 Silverliner V passenger cars due to a “significant structural defect” after staffers noticed they were “leaning.” The move effectively reduced the Regional Rail fleet by one third and set the stage for a potential commuting clusterf*ck when people return to work Tuesday. The Silverliner V has been plagued by design flaws since it was introduced in 2010; the latest issue is with the “truck,” the part that holds the wheels and axles in place. SEPTA officials said the flaw did not pose a safety threat, but plan to keep cars offline until it can be fixed, which could be “weeks,” i.e. possibly not until the end of summer.
