SODA TAX IS LAW: THESE COUNCIL AIDES DID THE MATH
Yesterday, Mayor Jim Kenney signed into law a 1.5 cent-per-ounce tax on sugary (and diet!) beverages in the City of Philadelphia. Earlier, we sat down with City Council CFO Matt Stitt and some of the other 20- and 30-somethings who work behind the scenes in City Council. They’re not the Council president or the mayor or elected officials. They’re analysts and attorneys who could be in the private sector making more money and working less hours. Instead, they’ve sat in their offices until 9 p.m. at night for months. This is the inside story of how Philly’s soda tax was made, from the ground-level city employees who worked on it before and during its days in the council chamber.
SHOULD THE SIXERS TRY TO GET NBA CHAMPION KEVIN LOVE?
Kevin Love won a championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Last summer, Love re-signed with the Cavs for a whopping five years and $110 million after a stop-and-start first season in Cleveland that had many wondering if Love would look to play elsewhere just a year after the trade that brought him in as LeBron’s second fiddle. Could that somewhere be Philly? Our Dan Levy looks at the pros and cons.

MODERN ART FROM MANAYUNK GRAFFITI
When Leah Macdonald started pouring wax on her prints, she had no idea she’d stumbled on a centuries-old artform first used in Ancient Greece. Called “encaustic painting,” the technique is kind of like Photoshop, MacDonald says — manipulating a photograph after the fact to add interest — but IRL, with real tactile surface and depth. Here’s what the end result looks like (and you can see it in person at the Manayunk Arts Festival this weekend).
FROZEN TREATS: WE’RE IN THE ELITE 8
Happy summer! The season of frozen treats is officially here this week, just in time to present our Elite Eight. Several of these hot weather pleasers battled it out to get here, with nearly as many lead changes in their races as Cavs/Warriors Game 7. Details are right here — get your vote in now!
