THE PENN RELAYS AND THE CASE THAT COULD FINALLY PAY NCAA ATHLETES
At the Penn Relays, 100-year-old Ida Keeling set a world record by finishing the 100-meter dash in 1:17. But most of those who descended on Franklin Field over the weekend were students. Are NCAA events like these more than just about play and the love of the sport? Are the athletes also performing what should legally be considered work for their universities? That question has been proposed by two members of the Penn track team, and their lawsuit is now in court — pending an appeal.
THIS WEEKEND ONLY: SOUTH PHILLY’S LE VIRTU SERVES A 49-INGREDIENT MINESTRONE
The special soup is called le virtù, and yes, the East Passyunk restaurant was named after this dish. It’s from Teramo, Abruzzo, the Italian province where co-owner Francis Cratil Cretarola’s grandfather grew up, and it’s prepared just once a year to be served on May 1. In keeping with tradition, it’s being served this weekend in South Philly, too.
