So this is a bomb cyclone, huh? The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning until 7 p.m. tonight, with snowfall totals from 4-8 inches expected. And then the winds will come, with chills so cold they "will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin." The Philadelphia school district announced schools will be closed today and all after-school activities are canceled as well. For more information on if your office is closed today, Slack or text your boss and say you're totally snowed in then make everyone hot chocolate and be safe if you have to shovel.
If you must brave the elements the next two days to shovel your sidewalk, clear off your car or get to work, check this link to make sure your vehicle isn't on one of the city's snow emergency routes. If so, it has probably already been moved for the plows, so call 215-686-SNOW to see where they put it. And speaking of plows, did you know Philly has more than 2,500 miles of roads to plow? Here's a look inside the chaos of a Philly snow day.
Apparently it’s not just journalism majors who want to learn about weed. In its third semester, Chris Goldstein's "Marijuana in the Media" course — previously a specialty elective at Temple's Klein School of Media and Communication — has been opened up to the entire student body. What was the impetus for the expansion? Growing interest in the topic. You can't get an entire degree in cannabis at Temple yet, but Goldstein expects to have business and medical students join the budding reporters in his class this time around. And, he told Billy Penn, University administration has been fully supportive, with no pushback.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection officially halted work on Sunoco's Mariner East 2 gas pipeline Wednesday. The pipeline, which traverses Southern Pa. and will transport propane, butane and ethane from the Marcellus Shale to a terminus near Philly, had been plagued with spills and other issues during construction, including what the DEP termed "egregious and willful violations" of state law, per an Associated Press report. The shutdown lasts until Sunoco can come up with a plan to fix the problems.

Brian Dawkins was named a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, one of 15 modern-era players who, along with Terrell Owens, will be up for enshrinement this year. Both BDawk and T.O. were finalists last year too, but neither made it in. So will they make it this year? We make a strong case for both, and try to explain why Dawkins should be a lock, but Owens could have to get in line for a while.
The Frankfort Chocolate Factory on Washington Avenue is officially on the National Register of Historic Places. Basically, the owners get a tax credit now, but as Curbed noted, public meetings have been held to discuss what to do with the facility, built in 1865. Plans may include possible apartments, townhouses and retail shopping.
