SODA TAX LESSONS FROM ITS BERKELEY COUNCIL SPONSOR
It’s hard to predict what would happen if Philadelphia instituted a soda/sugary drinks tax because Berkeley, Calif. is the only other city in America to have done it. Billy Penn spoke with Berkeley City Councilman Laurie Capitelli, who spearheaded the effort to pass it there. He offered insight into how the idea got popular, how supporters fended off Big Soda’s ad blitz and why he wishes the tax was even higher.
SEPTA: THE BIKE-VS.-BUS DRIVER ‘ACTED PROFESSIONALLY’
SEPTA has reviewed video of Wednesday’s incident in which a cyclist stopped a SEPTA bus in Center City and has concluded the bus driver did nothing wrong. Per a spokesperson, before the standoff, the cyclist moved slightly to avoid the truck. The bus moved over as well and passed the cyclist at the same time as the cyclist was passing the truck, leaving what SEPTA calls “plenty of room for everybody.”
COMCAST WILL BOLT A BOX OF WIRES TO YOUR HOUSE — UNLESS YOU SAY ‘NO’
Comcast has a team of 150 technicians combing the city daily for wires that need to be moved or replaced. In some cases, they are drilling into the facades of customers’ houses and installing boxes to store wires. If anybody on your street has Comcast, look for one of these notices on your door soon.
