WHY THIS JOHNNY DOC RAID IS DIFFERENT THAN LAST TIME
The FBI came for John Dougherty in 2006, alleging a South Philly electrical contractor has done work on the Local 98 boss’ home and hidden the transaction. Johnny Doc skated through, but the contractor spent two years in prison. This time, Philly.com reports, things are different. More search warrants. Whispers of wire taps. Payments to the same contractor who did the time back in ’06. The investigation might feel different, but everything is till business as usual right now for Dougherty.
CHECK THE ‘BEST BY’ DATE NEXT TIME YOU BUY BEER
Right now there are more than 4,000 US breweries, and if the trend keeps up, the number will hit 5,000 by next year. The growth is fueled by drinkers, who mostly love the variety. Instead of sticking with a favorite brand, people actively seek out styles and labels they haven’t had before. Stores are answering the demand by stocking more kinds of beer. That makes it harder than ever to ensure it’s always fresh. Which might be why we found some 2014 Winter Ale Welcome in one Center City shop. And that’s just the beginning. Old beer is a real thing — and the epidemic is getting worse.
