Public pools closed last week in Philadelphia, meaning residents in most neighborhoods had one final opportunity for a dip. For people in Fishtown, it meant something else: the entire summer passed and construction never began on shuttered Lederer Pool. Here's why renovations at The Swimmo still haven't gotten underway.
Made in America is the best-known music fest landing in Philly this Labor Day weekend, but it's not the only one. From Friday through Sunday, the inaugural YallaPunk festival will take place in Fishtown, with dozens of performers spread across three venues. People are coming from all over the country to participate and attend, because the event is historic: It's likely the first Arab-American punk festival ever.
So remember last fall when people in all parts of the country were spotting random, creepy-looking clowns? The Pennsylvania State Police are here to tell you that's probably gonna happen again. In a release issued this week, officials encouraged people to report any such sightings to the Terrorism Tip Line (888-292-1919) or to firstname.lastname@example.org. One reason they expect more creepy clown sightings this fall? The movie It hits theaters next week.

The School District's newest tech tool is drawing comparisons to Netflix. Whether the Exemplary Teaching Video Library is the Netflix/Uber/Facebook of teaching doesn't really matter. What's cool, though, is that it has an 80-video inventory showcasing real classroom lessons in Philly schools. Educators can watch, learn from and assess the lessons, including a high school tutorial on Spanish adjectives, fourth grade multiplication tricks and much more.
“We want to be of the city, not above the city,” Opera Philadelphia Artistic Director David Devan told Curbed. So this year, for the first time ever, the opera company's 12-day festival is taking place across multiple sites. Watch the Marriage of Figaro on Independence Mall. See the world premiere of Wake World at the Barnes, and catch an interactive opera at the Art Museum. The O17 Festival starts Sept. 14.
