JULY 4TH BREAKFAST: MAKE YOUR OWN KOFFEE KAKES
Koffee Kakes might be the only acceptable breakfast Tastykake, and now you can get that delicious crumble without licking it off plastic packaging. In our latest Tasty Fakes installment, Osteria pastry chef Danielle Seipp teaches us how to make our own version of Koffee Kakes. They’re pretty easy to whip up and taste way better than the original. Start July 4th off right with your own.
LISTEN TO THESE 12 PHILLY SOUL SONGS AND THE NEW JAMS THEY INSPIRED
You’ve probably figured out by now that today’s Welcome America concert will be pretty
lame family friendly. But the planned tribute to Philly Soul is the saving grace. This city has so much to be proud of thanks to that music, and tunes from The Intruders, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The O’Jays, and MFSB will rock the Parkway. A lot of these songs inspired some of your favorite pop and rap jams. Listen to the 12 clips we put together of original Philly Soul songs paired with their contemporary samples.
Start with Independence Hall's "Celebration of Freedom," follow the parade to the river, then hop on the Phlash and hit the Party on the Parkway for the afternoon.
Where: Historic District and Ben Franklin Parkway at various places — just look for the USA flags
When: July 4, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
How much: Free
HOW TO GET AROUND DURING WELCOME AMERICA
There’s some rain in the forecast and your friend with the killer Art Museum apartment hasn’t decided yet if she’s having people over for fireworks (programming note: those are starting earlier this year). A lot of things might be up in the air for your July 4th festivities, but one thing is for certain: the Parkway is going to be absolutely mobbed today. DO NOT DRIVE. You probably don’t want to take an Uber either, if your goal is to actually get near the festivities. Here’s the SEPTA schedule for today and a map of Indego stations if you plan to use bike share.
HOW MUCH WILL YOUR COMMUTE SUCK TOMORROW?
Nothing like a little Regional Rail problem to welcome you back to work, right? SEPTA pulled 120 Silverliner V cars over the weekend due to a structural deficiency, and trains will operate on a Saturday schedule Tuesday. What we know so far is that service won’t return to normal until August, and that SEPTA is encouraging Regional Rail riders to use buses, subways and trolleys when they can. Yes, these Silverliner V trains are new, and yes, these are the ones that were delayed several years during production. Here’s a long history of the Silverliner V cars and their short time in operation. SEPTA is expected to release more scheduling information today.
