Philadelphia has lofty aspirations of becoming an energy hub. But it can hardly move forward with those goals before it figures out what the heck it’s going to do with Philadelphia Gas Works, the city-owned public utility company. Here’s the long story, short: Mayor Michael Nutter searched for two years to find a private buyer to purchase PGW. Connecticut-based UIL Holdings won the deal and offered nearly $2 billion. Council killed the deal with little explanation and no public hearings. Now, it’s up to the city to figure out how to move forward.
