Anyone who’s covered Election Night knows it can be one of the most exciting or the most boring times in a newsroom. Candidates are pulling out all the stops, poll watchers are issuing early reports on voting problems and editors are ordering copious amounts of pizza for reporters who aren’t already at candidates’ parties.

Even if the races are predictable and the results get called early, hanging out in the newsroom can be a pretty great time. So why not expand the circle for the night? Taking a cue from NJ News Commons, Billy Penn is hosting a shared newsroom on Election Night.

Philly-based newsies who might otherwise be working from home or a quiet(er) newsroom are invited to gather in one place and work alongside each other. We’ll be tweeting and filing stories as soon as the polls close at 8 p.m. Location details aren’t quite final, but we’ll be in Old City. Wifi and the first round are on us. All you need is your device of choice.

We’re all covering the same election. Let’s be social in the process.

Shannon Wink was editor of Billy Penn from August 2017 to January 2018.
