Philadelphia police have fielded calls for more than 17,000 reports of theft so far this calendar year — and nearly 10 percent of those reports came from the same 20 blocks.
Billy Penn went through data publicly available via Open Data Philly, which posts crime statistics (for part 1 offenses like murder, rape, burglary and theft) for the year to date. Due to privacy, only the block is listed in the data where the thefts occur, rather than a specific address. But many of these blocks have just one or two establishments on them — and you’d be surprised at how many are simply huge stores like Wal-Mart and Target.
Here’s a map of how spread out the thefts are:
Without further ado, these are the 20 most stolen-from blocks in Philly, beginning with the Wal-Mart and its surrounding stores in Lawncrest:
