Eight songs to remember this week’s Philly news, from a Charles Ramsey ‘goodbye’ to a Center City ban contingent on ‘hungry eyes’

North Star Bar

This week we saw Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey declare he was going to leave his position, and the men who pleaded guilty to an assault on a gay couple receive an unusual punishment. There was also news that the FBI is investigating L&I — so not everything was unusual. Billy Penn recaps these stories and more, and pairs them with music as part of the weekly #BillyPennPlaylist.

“Hungry Eyes,” Eric Carmen

Better keep your eyes peeled for the next five years. The two men who pleaded guilty in the Center City gay attack received probationary sentences that include a ban from Center City — Washington to Girard, river to river. And the only way it can really be enforced is for people to call them out if they see them.

“You’re Pretty Good Looking (For a Girl)” The White Stripes

The North Star Bar will be closing this weekend after 34 years of bringing Philadelphia live music. Many of its acts were musicians and bands working their way up in the world. Like the White Stripes in 2001.

“Triumph,” Wu-Tang Clan

Han Dynasty hosted a Wu-Tang meal on Wednesday that featured 20 courses of food and 11 beers and a little bit of Wu music in the background. Anna Orso made it through.

“Goodbye, Goodbye,” Tegan and Sara

Police commissioner Charles Ramsey announced Wednesday that he would retire at the beginning of next year. Mayor Michael Nutter even cried.

He should probably be happy for him, though. Ramsey might try to get some type of national position.

“The Judge,” Twenty One Pilots

Voter turnout, if the primaries are any indication, will likely be abysmal next month. But there is at least one race you should really care about. The spots up for grabs on the PA Supreme Court could keep Pennsylvania red or shift it blue.

“All The Small Things,” Blink 182

The Sixers and Wells Fargo have been in an odd fight for the last few months and because of it the Sixers have decided to start calling their home arena The Center, instead of The Wells Fargo Center. The Sixers elevated the feud by doing this:

“Ordinary Day,” Vanessa Carlton

Danya Henninger reported that the FBI is investigating L&I investigators for possibly taking bribes. Just your average dose of Tuesday corruption!

“Birthday,” Katy Perry

It was Billy Penn’s birthday on Wednesday!
