8 songs for the week’s news from the D.A.’s ‘good ol boys club’ to cops ‘asleep at the wheel’

Five months after it was supposed to be completed, Pennsylvania’s budget looks like it might finally be completed by the end of this month. The battle might come to an end. The same can’t be said for the porny email scandal, which this week saw a demonstration outside of the D.A.’s office and a lawsuit filed against Kathleen Kane by former prosecutors, including those who were demonstrated against.

Billy Penn recaps those stories and others from this week and combines them with music as part of the #BillyPennPlaylist.

“A Horse is Not a Home,” Miike Snow

Pennsylvania politicians say a budget will be done by Thanksgiving and even agreed to a framework of a deal. As part of that deal, the Republicans want to be sure Pennsylvanians won’t have to pay sales tax on horses. Earlier this year, Wolf wanted to lift that exemption.

“First,” Cold War Kids

On Thursday, Drexel became the first Philadelphia university to revoke a Bill Cosby honorary degree. That leaves six area schools who have presented Cosby with honorary degrees who have yet to take them back.

“Good Ol’ Boys Club,” Kacey Musgraves

City Councilwomen got together to rally against the D.A.’s office for its continued employment of three attorneys who were part of the porny email scandal. Cindy Bass said, “If this is some ole boys’ network, who is there to defend us?”

“Lift Off,” Kanye West and Jay-Z

Sixers owner Josh Harris ruined a kids’ soccer game in Newark this week. A helicopter that was supposed to pick him up landed in the middle of the field before the game’s scheduled. Harris didn’t show up in time, the helicopter remained on the field and the game had to be canceled.

“21st Century Breakdown,” Green Day

The Mummers Parade is finally going to allow ethnic groups to be part of the parade.

“Ima Boss,” Meek Mill featuring Rick Ross

We have a new police commissioner, and his name is Richard Ross. Mayor-elect Jim Kenney announced the selection Wednesday.

“So Far to Go,” J Dilla

The porny email/attorney general/Sandusky scandals and the way they’re interconnected will never end. Never. Several former prosecutors filed a lawsuit against Kathleen Kane Thursday.

“Tonight is The Night I Fell Asleep at The Wheel,” Barenaked Ladies

A couple of police officers fell asleep in their car in North Philly. It went viral pretty quickly. The police department is looking into it.
