It’s an age-old question, but that’s not going to stop us. We’re putting 32 of the city’s best (and best-known) cheesesteaks up against each each other to finally determine who makes the ultimate version of this Philly icon. The Ultimate Philly Cheesesteak Bracket kicks off next Friday, Nov. 11, and through your votes, we’ll narrow down the options each week until we come up with the overall winner.
But first, we need your help.
Even though the Billy Penn team has a helluva lot of combined cheesesteak experience, we definitely don’t know every awesome griddler out there. So we’re turning to you for nominations to finish out the bracket.
There’s an open spot in each of our four quadrants, which break up the city geographically:
- West/Northwest
- Center City
- South Philly
- North/Northeast
(True, this means we can’t end up with a finals that pits Pat’s against Geno’s. Sorry.)
A few important guidelines to remember as you think up your submissions for those No. 8 seeds:
- This bracket is only for beef cheesesteaks. No chicken, no vegan, nothing fancy like venison. Those sandwiches can be good. They do not fit into this contest.
- This bracket is only for stores/shops inside the Philadelphia city limits. Apologies to Mama’s in Bala Cynwyd, but it’s on the wrong side of City Ave.
- Food truck or cart nominations are acceptable, if the vendor has either a) a recognizable name or b) a regular vending location. In other words, “that one cart I ate at one time near Misconduct” will not count.
- Do not submit a place we have already included on our bracket. These are listed in the graphic above and the table below.

The nomination in each quadrant with the most submissions will be placed on the official bracket next week. You have until Thursday, Nov. 10 to submit your favorites. Go to it!
