When Philly’s Department of Parks and Recreation announced public pool opening dates earlier this week, one was conspicuously missing.
A small note at the bottom, once you scroll past the list of 70-plus pools says, “Lederer Pool will be closed this season for necessary structural and mechanical repairs.”
Better known as The Swimmo, the pool at Montgomery Avenue and Moyer Street has seen better days.
Frank Fabey, deputy commissioner for skills and operations, explained the pool needs to be completely taken out. The pool was installed above ground when the city put it in 30 years ago, but most pools are now in-ground.
“It’s been around for a long time, and it’s a good opportunity to update it,” Fabey said.
Fabey said other concerns are the piping system, which has worn out with age. He added the project will take about a year, and unless there are any problems, the pool should be up and running again next season. But no guarantees on that timeline.
The good news is, Fishtowners won’t completely melt away this summer. Parks and Rec recommends going to Cione Pool, 2600 E. Aramingo Ave., or Hancock Pool, 1401 N. Hancock St., instead.
