Philly’s coronavirus response

PPA coronavirus rules: You probably won’t get a parking ticket during quarantine

But don’t double park or block a loading zone.

If you’re worried about a parking ticket on top of everything else dealing with the coronavirus entails, you can rest a little easier. The Philadelphia Parking Authority is making changes to its protocol, and will only enforce major safety violations, officials announced Tuesday.

The PPA will shift its focus for at least the next two weeks, according to executive director Scott Petri. Meters, kiosks and residential time limits will not be enforced, he confirmed.

Instead, the agency will prioritize safety violations that pose a threat to public safety or impede emergency services, like double-parking and loading zone violations. So don’t do that.

Petri also asked residents to be courteous when it comes to taking up space.

“Try not to park in parking spots all day long,” Petri said. “It’s really important that we be considerate to one another.”

There’s no amnesty for existing tickets, though. If you already have one due, you can pay it online or by phone at 1-888-591-3636. If you have to pick up a vehicle that got towed, head over to the impoundment lot at 2501 S. Weccacoe Ave. in South Philly.

Meantime, the agency is limiting its in-person contact. The PPA administrative office at 7th and Market is closed until at least March 30.

That means if you had a hearing scheduled between now and the end of the month, you’ll get notified of a new date by mail.

The PPA’s 18 parking garages around Philadelphia will remain open for the foreseeable future.
