Philadelphia is one of five U.S. cities to receive COVID-19 vaccine directly from the federal government. Where does it go? The Health Department has started publishing a list of organizations that receive doses from the city.

Officials aren’t yet releasing specifics about how much vaccine is distributed to each provider, and the info is not meant to help people figure out where to make appointments.

“This information is to provide an overview of where vaccines are being administered,” wrote department spokesperson James Garrow, “and does NOT represent where you can get vaccine.”

Vaccinations in Philly so far are being done via invitation only. If you’re in an eligible group, your best bet to get on the list and receive an invite is to sign up at phila.gov/vaccineinterest.

Just over 100 providers around the city are currently eligible to receive doses, according to the Health Department. They include:

• Hospitals
• Chain pharmacies
• Health clinics (aka federally qualified health centers, or FQHC)
• Specialty care (aka nursing home or assisted living)
• Congregate settings (including jails)
• Community groups (like the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium)
• Urgent care centers
• Independent pharmacies

As of mid-February, only one urgent care center and one independent pharmacy are on the list. It does include locations all over the city, though Northwest, Southwest and Northeast Philly have a lower concentration of options.

Even without the ability to make appointments, the information about which entities are getting vaccine and where they’re located is useful to gauge how well the rollout is going. Most residents hope trusted partners will be giving inoculations, instead of unvetted startups — as happened in early January.

Knowing where doses go is also important in the context of equitable distribution.

A plan to use Lincoln Financial Field for vaccination was shot down by Mayor Jim Kenney and Health Commissioner Tom Farley on the grounds that its location just off two highways would attract many more out-of-towners. According to city data, Black people have received fewer than 20% of doses despite making up nearly 45% of the city’s population.

Places administering vaccine are encouraged not to ask for proof of residency. That guidance also holds true at a federal and state level, with the idea being that in general, more people vaccinated = better for everyone.
