The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival is returning this summer to Franklin Square, from June 20 to August 31, bringing with it an array of illuminated sculptures, cultural performances and seasonal attractions. Hosted by Historic Philadelphia, in partnership with Tianyu Arts and Culture, the festival has become a staple of Philadelphia’s summer events calendar. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or someone considering a return trip, here’s what you can expect this year.

What’s new for 2025?

Each year, the festival introduces new lantern displays while bringing back familiar favorites. In honor of the Year of the Snake, this year’s event will feature:

  • A redesigned forest-themed section with illuminated wildlife and interactive elements
  • An expanded underwater-themed area, showcasing marine creatures in vibrant colors
  • The return of the 200-foot-long dragon, a festival staple
  • More lanterns, more lights, and more intricate designs

While the overall structure of the festival remains similar from year to year, the rotating themes and new installations help keep things fresh. If you haven’t attended in a few years, this could be a great time to revisit.

More than lanterns

Beyond the visual appeal, the festival offers additional experiences:

  • Live stage performances featuring Chinese dance, acrobatics and other traditional arts
  • A choreographed fountain light show at the Rendell Family Fountain
  • Food and drink options, including Asian cuisine and American comfort food
  • A Cocktail Garden, offering a place to sit and enjoy an evening drink
  • Shopping stalls with handcrafted folk art and souvenirs

For families, the festival also offers discounted access to Philly Mini Golf and the Parx Liberty Carousel, adding more ways to round out an evening in Franklin Square.
