Spring is here and, as it gets warmer, Philly’s sidewalks are already teeming with runners trying to shake off the winter rust, or those who signed up for the Broad Street Run lottery and now have a 10-mile check that, in their overexuberance, they weren’t expecting to actually cash.

Whether you’re a seasoned runner, looking to pick up a new healthy habit (if so, we have a list of great parks and trails in the area to get started), or just want some company while you’re getting your miles in, there are run groups for all levels and interests around the city and beyond.

The maps (eight, for each day of the week, plus one for groups with changing schedules) have details about when and where each group meets, how far and fast they run, and general vibes. If we missed one of yours, send the details along to nkariuki@billypenn.com

Some Billy Penn and WHYY News reporters, runners of various levels and interests, have also volunteered to check out some of the groups over the next few months and give their personal impressions.

If we don’t mention a fee or prerequisite, the group is free to join.

Endorphins Running Philadelphia

Contact info

Instagram: @endorphinsrunning

App link (for all other information)

About the group

This group focuses on spreading positivity and happiness through exercise – essentially, fueling your endorphins. The group is welcoming and inclusive – often giving many pace and distance options and encouraging its group members to talk to new people and run without headphones to create connections. If you’re looking for an equally social- and running-based club, this one is for you.

Meeting times and locations

Mondays (5-mile run) at 6:45 a.m. at the Rocky Steps

Thursdays (4- to 5-mile run) at 6:30 p.m. at Yards Brewing

Saturdays (8- to 16-mile run) at 8 a.m. at City Hall

Our experience

I’ll give out a biased opinion here – but this is one of my favorite run clubs I’ve ever attended. I’ve ran for over 10 years, and have certainly had my experience of not feeling welcome at various clubs. Endorphins bases its mission on “positivity and happiness through movement and exercise.” As soon as you show up, you’re encouraged to talk to at least one new person during the run, and to limit the pace so you can have a conversation.

A lot of run clubs can focus on the competitive nature of running – those are great in some circumstances. Here, it is so much more about balancing that with a positive experience for your social and mental health. I’ll sometimes choose to run in a faster group, but I find things more fun when I run at a conversational pace. I constantly attend alone and despite being in different pace groups with friends I’ve made, I’m always meeting new people and friends.

The “endorphins” truly do exist at this run club. The post-run coffees (Saturdays) or beers (Thursday) also add to the social and community “vibe” of the group. I’d highly recommend it for anyone – the varying paces between 8 minutes/mile and 12 minutes/mile make it a group for many people (also – you can drop off whenever!).

About the group

This Singles Run Club group serves as a social spot for singles and friends alike to connect, network and have fun! The group typically hosts a weekly 3-mile run/1.5-mile walk and the #beersafter tag means there’s almost always the opportunity for a social hour (or two, or three) afterwards.

Meeting times and locations

Wednesdays at 6:45 p.m. at Rittenhouse Park (This is the typical timing, but there is a varying schedule and locations based on weather and season. Keep updated with their instagram).

Various popup and workout events throughout the year.

Our experience

I have attended Lunge once, and I really enjoyed the casual and social vibe to it. The meetup portion before the run begins with an icebreaker – this particular time, they asked us what kind of music gets us the “most hype.” We all went around discussing this, and this was a great way for us to easily turn to each other and meet new faces.

The group primarily aims to connect singles to one another, encouraging runners to wear the color black to indicate that they’re single. As you might imagine, most people coming wore black. The group’s #beersafter motto also means they meet after each run to network and grab a drink at a local bar, normally Wicked Wolf, afterwards. When I went, there were a range of pace groups and a walking option. It was very accessible.

If you’re trying to get in a super speedy or intense track workout, this may not be the space for you. But for just about everything else – the social vibes, meeting a potential partner, or getting in a chill, easy run – this is a good spot.

Our experience

I attended one meeting of Philly Slow Girl Run Club and immediately felt supported and welcomed! I frequent other run clubs, and I typically run at a pace faster than what is offered here. However, I knew I would enjoy the inclusive and welcoming nature I had heard about when a friend invited me.

When I went, there were multiple pace group options – ranging from 11- to 13-minute-per-mile paces. I went with the 11-minute group. I met a lot of cool girls who I chatted with, and felt the pace leads did a great job of facilitating and initiating conversations – especially for others who had come seemingly solo.

If you’re looking for a friendly, inclusive club, I’d definitely recommend this one! But there isn’t a lot of variety in terms of speed workouts or faster paces. If you’re looking for a more-intense workout, another club may be a better option.
