LGBTQ Pride Month is now in full swing.

The holiday was originally created as a way to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan – a pivotal protest by members of the gay community over a police raid at Stonewall Inn, a bar in Greenwich Village.

The U.S. initially had a day-long celebration on the last Sunday of June called “Gay Pride Day,” but eventually, the day grew into a month-long series of events.

Now, LGBTQ Pride Month celebrates how lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and queer Americans have strengthened the country.

Pride Month officially began on June 1 – but there will be celebrations all month long. And, the city’s big pride celebration will take place this weekend.

Here is a list of how to get involved.

Ahead of the Festival/March

Ahead of this weekend’s big slate of festivities, there are a number of ways you can celebrate. From panel discussions to performances, here’s some of the highlights:

All month long – Philly Pride Arts Festival

This festival contains a month-long lineup of art events, concerts, community engagement activities and performances to celebrate Philly’s queer creative scene and partner with local LGBTQIA+ organizations. The lineup includes everything from karaoke and cabaret to educational panels and speakers. Attend educational lectures on gender, connect with lawyers about the legal aspects of the name change process, go to a family-friendly drag storytime and more. The library also has a list of LGBTQ+ resources that are available even outside of Pride Month. And, the library will also host a transgender book fair later in July.

You can view all of the library’s pride related events on their website.
