CSAs give you the opportunity to have an active role in locally sourced produce (Billy Penn file photo)

What is a CSA, and how can you be a part of one?

The acronym stands for Community Supported Agriculture. In short, it is a way for community members to connect to local farmers. A CSA member pays upfront for a “share” of a farmer’s upcoming harvest, and in return, they’ll get access to regular produce or other farm-fresh food during the season.

Every CSA is different – meaning there can be different availability by season, different fruits, veggies, and other products available, different costs, and different delivery and pickup options.

But, CSAs can often add up to be cheaper for the consumer, and can help support farmers as part of the “share” money goes toward agricultural costs like seeds, equipment maintenance and labor.

Philly has many CSA options you can join or support. Here are some of your options!

(As a note, different CSAs also run through different seasons. So, most will have a summer or fall CSA season, with some offering options for winter. This information is for the most recent version of each CSA’s season, and is subject to change depending on season)

Also, SNAP requirements for each CSA can differ. Refer to the organization’s pages to learn more.
