Just as oat milk and almond milk lattes have taken coffee shops by storm, vegan ice cream — once a rarity amongst popular shops — is now a go-to option at many creameries in town.

If you’re vegan, lactose intolerant, or just enjoy a cashew base for your favorite frozen treat — this is a list for you. Sorbet and water ice are not included, only the creamiest ice creams will do. 

Crust Vegan Bakery

Crust bakery in East Falls is a woman-owned pastry shop, and one of the few places where you can order vegan soft-serve in the city. The shop often switches its signature flavor, so check out their Instagram for up-to-date info.

Irv’s Ice Cream

Irv’s Ice Cream in Bella Vista is a small-batch shop that features a rotating vegan menu. Different available options include chocolate marshmallow (yes, the marshmallows are vegan) and banana chocolate tahini swirl .

Lu & Augs has a vegan vanilla soft-serve option, which can be mixed, blended and coated with different candies, cookies and toppings. Their “sunrise in Cali” option, for example, includes crushed and toasted pistachios, coconut flakes and a dollop of sweet & sour yuzu marmalade. Yum!

Milk Jawn is known for its small-batch artisanal flavors, and the shop also has a bunch of vegan flavors as well. In addition to its regular diary line-up, guests can pick from scoops like mango sticky rice, mint stracciatella and Earl Grey with honeycomb.

The Franklin Fountain

The Franklin Fountain is known for its old-timey vibes and floats, and it turns out vegan ice cream is old-timey too. Apparently, dairy-free ice cream recipes date back all the way to 1899. The Franklin Fountain’s scoops include classics like chocolate, vanilla and Hydrox cookie (the original oreo).

Scoop DeVille

Scoop DeVille has plenty of vegan options, including various soft serve flavors. Customers can pick and choose between various dairy-free flavors and toppings. Plus, you can even order a vegan ice cream cake for a special party treat.

Van Leeuwen

Van Leeuwen started in New York in 2008, and now has two different locations in Center City. The shop is famous for its vast vegan ice cream menu. Its bases include coconut, cashew and oat with rotating flavors like banana bread pudding, peanut butter brownie honeycomb and Sicilian pistachio.

Weckerly’s also serves up delicious vegan flavors. Their base is made from coconut cream and cocoa butter. Options vary from classics like milk chocolate to trendy-fare like strawberry matcha.
