Philadelphians embrace automatic 20% service charge
Restaurants and bars all over the city have added a 20% automatic service charge to their bills in anticipation of World Cup tourists who are used to tipping less, if they tip anything at all.

Short- and very long-term time capsules to be kept in Philly
None of us will be alive when “America’s Time Capsule” will be reopened in 2276. A second capsule will be opened much earlier, in 2037.

- Philly’s Semiquincentennial Parade has been canceled due to the extreme heat, with heat index values expected between 105-112 degrees, or even higher. Organizers originally planned to shorten the route. [6ABC]

MAYOR WATCH
Mayor Parker will attend several July Fourth weekend events:
- She will speak at the National Constitution Center’s 38th Annual Liberty Medal Ceremony honoring Pope Leo XIV — via livestream from the Vatican — recognizing his lifelong commitment to advancing religious liberty and freedom of conscience and expression while celebrating the enduring values of the U.S. Constitution. (10:30 a.m.)
On July 4th itself:
- Parker starts the day with officials burying the America250 Time Capsule at 5th and Chestnut outside Independence Hall. (8:30 a.m.)
- Then she hosts the Wawa Welcome America: Celebration of Freedom at the National Constitution Center, where she will present 7 Philadelphia Freedom Awards honoring individuals whose leadership, service, and achievements embody the enduring ideals of the Declaration of Independence. (10 a.m.)
- Parker then joins the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Commemoration on Independence Mall. (2 p.m.)
- Later, it’s over to the big One Philly: Unity Concert for America on the Ben Franklin Parkway, for opening remarks at 5 p.m.
- And then Parker speeds to the Linc (ahem, Philadelphia Stadium) for the big FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 Match: France vs. Paraguay — the final match hosted in Philadelphia during the tournament.
On Sunday, Parker attends neighborhood celebrations, including at Lawncrest Community Day & Fireworks Celebration. (3:30 p.m.)
