The Shakers: Black Visionary Practices in Collective Life – (6 to 8 p.m.)
Join this conversation between featured artist and choreographer Reggie Wilson, whose work explores the intersections of African diasporic and Shaker traditions through movement and embodied research, and artist and composer Jean-Marc Superville Sovak, whose practice engages Black history, spirituality, and collective memory through music, performance, and storytelling. This panel considers the histories, legacies, and representations of Black Shakers through the lens of Wilson’s POWER and Superville Sovak’s folk opera There Are NO Black Shakers. You don’t need to be on vacation to send a postcard! At this event, we’ll browse and learn the art of writing one. Once, Americans sent postcards by the billions; now, in the twilight of paper mail delivery, this compact medium is taking on a new charm. Learn a bit about the “World’s First Social Network” and be surprised all over again (or for the first time) at the process of putting a few words on the back of a picture. Why dream of a new world when we can build one together? Futurefull is hosting a live, multicultural storytelling event every third Saturday this summer. With drums, song, music, and dice, come play in our circle and tell the story of a brighter future inspired by traditional Jamaican storytelling. Take the role of an ancestor of a girl in the deep future named Olamina; together, we inspire or challenge her as we play through a day in her life. Every conflict is resolved with a dice role, and every resolution is turned into call-and-response song. If you love TTRPGs, storytelling, improvising, and play, this is for you.
