As small businesses beg for relief, Philadelphia sees a $100 million windfall
Mayor Cherelle Parker’s plan to boost city revenues via a series of narrowly tailored business tax hikes mostly fell through this year, with City Council rejecting proposed new levies on Uber trips, hotel stays, and deliveries by Amazon and other companies.
Yet the amount of tax that businesses are paying the city is nonetheless considerably higher than it was a couple years ago, due in part to an increase in tax bills on small businesses. Continue reading…

MAYOR WATCH
Mayor Parker signed a disaster declaration Saturday evening following massive destruction caused by “microburst” storms. She plans to continue touring storm-damaged neighborhoods with city officials while providing updates on recovery efforts.
The mayor’s office also issued warnings to beware scams — the city does not charge for emergency response services or storm-related work performed on public property, including in city parks. “Call 911 if they believe someone is attempting to take advantage of storm victims.”
Residents can also receive emergency information and recovery updates by texting STORMPHL to 888-777 to enroll in the City’s free emergency text alert system.
